The Haiku Stairs, or better known as the "Stairway to Heaven", is located on the Island of Oahu in Hawaii, however it's incredibly unfortunate that it is illegal to climb the 4,000 steps stairway. Now it's even sad and upsetting that the government plans to dismantle the stairs to stop future thrill seekers.
The stairs were built in 1942 as a method to reach the transmission station at the mountain top, used for war time communication. After WW2 the station was converted to a GPS satellite, which at the time were located on high peaks on Earth. Land based satellites are no longer used since the advent of space bound units.
If you love outdoor adventures and thrill, you simply must take the trip and challenge the law (it's merely a citation to break the law) before the Haiku Stairway is removed.
